The Front Yard Garden

I am loving the little front yard garden right now! The zinnias that I grew from seed are taking off, and the tomatoes, zucchini, and peppers are thriving and setting fruit. Which I'm not quite sure what to make of it. No viruses, no bugs, no mildew, no blossom end rot. Maybe it's a sign from the veggie gods that Hubs needs to plow the front yard and make it one big vegetable garden. I can just picture "the look" I'd get for that suggestion. ;)

So friends, what are your favorite recipes using summer vegetables?

Your vegetables and flowers are gorgeous! We love a baked dish we make with zucchini, rice, sausage, seasonings...sometimes some green beans....

Which variety of zinnia did you grow? My zinnia seedlings aren't looking that great - Lilliput Mix and Lavender Queen from Baker Creek.

So jealous of your peppers too!

Threecollie, sounds yummy!

Whiterice, they're a burpee heirloom called chippendale zinnia. I think I picked them up at Lowes.

Lisa, is the flying squirrel still in the birdhouse?

Thanks Darla!

Those zuchinni blossoms look good for stuffing, battering and frying. Yum.

Shamu, do you have a particular recipe you use?

I spoke to the veggie gods the other day (surprisingly, they are very polite though a little plumper than I had anticipated). I made the mistake of mentioning recipes. Then, I just couldn't get way.

Everything looks beautiful!
My favorite summer veggie recipe is to take squash, zukes, onions, peppers and mushrooms, marinate them in a little soy sauce and garlic and then saute them on the grill. Very tasty!

Prospero, I imagine they are a wealth of information. ;)

ScMomma, that sounds close to a recipe my SIL Em uses.

Anon, Mom? Jenn? Pat?

I love to make soup with whatever I have on hand. I cut up an onion, and maybe a couple cloves of garlic, and saute them in a little olive or canola oil. Then, I'll put some broth or water, and whatever veggies I have in the order of which take longer to cook. Celery and carrots may be next, and maybe a can of tomatoes or cut up fresh ones. The zucchini would go in towards the end, along with a can or two of black or other beans. Season with fresh or dried oregano, thyme, rosemary, or whatever, herbs you like.

I'll also saute veggies and add some eggs to scramble or just cook through and turn when the veggies are almost done. Grated cheese on top is yummy.

You probably know this, but they are good raw, too.

I love your zucchini! So much more colorful than mine. This year I made the mistake of spraying oil too early in the day, and I lost a whole bunch of squash and zucchini. But they're on the way back now!

Sue, soup sounds great! I think I'll put a pot on for dinner.

Kara, I'm so bummed! We went out last night and found some caterpillars that had got inside the squash, and on top of that, they have mildew goin'on. I'm so sad.
