I've seen them around our rivers but never at my pond... that I know of! I've had Great Blue Heron, egret and kingfishers.
I have, on occasion, used a decoy goldfish. Worked great on the kingfisher. He would dive in and get so mad when he could not get the decoy out (anchored to a rock). He'd sit on the roof of the shed and chatter and natter.
When will nature ever learn it's boundaries? Darn bird thinks he gets to do what comes naturally! Same with coyotes, owls, hawks, possums and racoons around here.
I was so lucky with my pond. Never lost a fish. Can he somehow tie fishing line above the pond? I see hotels doing that to keep the birds out of the pools. Sorry about John and your loss. I STILL couldn't find any flamingo's this summer. Rat's!

Wow! I can see where he might not be welcome at your pond, but what a beauty!

ThreeC, it really is a beautiful heron. And not one you see around all that much.
Froggy, BAWAHAHA! We are so doing that!
But wow, he's beautiful!!!
You know, I hear they taste just like chicken.
(heron not koi)
Great, so now i'm not just missing ALL of my fish, but i've got a nifty camera lens shaped hole in the porch screen.
Is there a story behind the nemesis? I'm not familiar with Florida fauna...
Baby, it's more like a big ole slash....
MS, the herons tend to like dining on pond fish. We've gone years with a pond and have never had a problem until this beauty of a heron showed up.
Oooooohhh I seeee - the bird has come for lunch.
the racoons eat any koi around here, and I'm sorry for John's loss. :-( But that's a really cute bird?

Sorry about the fish. The heron is pretty and all, but I hope forgets where your pond is now that he has emptied it!
We are a summer vacationing spot for the Great Blue Heron - your gardens & yard look so lovely & so loved xo S
Oh, no. So sorry to hear your koi became dinner. But you caught a terrific shot of the heron!
Dani, you should post pictures of the beautiful koi so the beautiful heron doesn't get all the sympathy, predator that he is. Equal time, you know.
He is beautiful...but to have him eat all your koi is NOT good!

A perfect sushi buffet for Mister Heron. Can you blame him?
Hi Dani,
