I wish I had some yummy looking veggies to show you all, but the vegetable garden is quiet for right now. July, August and September tend to be our hottest months, and the veggies just can't handle those kind of temperatures.

Luckily, we have the wildflowers around the house putting on their summertime show. :)

Our Backyard Pond

A few years ago, Hubs was so sweet and put in a backyard pond for me as a birthday gift (I'm so not a jewelry type of girl). It definitely has been the kind of gift that keeps on giving. And now, it's the place to be if you're a critter. For me, that's the best part, watching the life that goes on all around, seeing the little birds flourish and my frogs reproducing. It feels good to be able to lend them a hand. Living in concrete land, it's gotta be a welcoming sight.

Climbing Aster

My Climbing Aster started blooming about a week and a half ago. And what a sight to see! Not only does it flower like crazy, attracting all kinds of little pollinators, Asters are also a host plant for the Pearl Crescent and American Painted Lady caterpillars. A very cool plant, I think it might be my new favorite.

Hammock Snakeroot

Hammock Snakeroot is another great wildflower for the shady areas of the yard. I have mine planted in with Rouge Berry and Wild Coffees and it really looks beautiful when all of them are in bloom.

Yellowtop in the garden

Hubby was able to get the second raised bed built for me over the weekend. It proved to be a little difficult trying to work around the Yellowtop that has gone bonkers, but he got it in, and staked the Yellowtop up so that it wasn't hanging over the bed. And now I'm just debating on what to grow in it. So many choices! But, I think I'm leaning towards doing parsnips and carrots. I've never grown parsnips before, so I'm definitely excited to give those a try.

My Beautyberry and Goldenrod plants are so pretty this time of year, reminding me that even though it's still so hot out, autumn is on it's way.

Cotton plants

The vegetable garden is awaiting work right now, so I've just been snapping pics of my flowers in bloom around the yard. This beauty is the Cotton plant in some of it's different stages. A neat plant to have around, especially if you have little kids.

Rattlesnake master

This isn't quite what you would expect with a name like Rattlesnake master. At one time, people thought it treated venomous snake bites, and I assume that's how the name came about.

Wild Coffee (Pyschotria nervosa)

I just love my Wild Coffee plants. I've got six planted in the shade under my oak tree and they're just thriving. I particularly like them this time of year when they are blooming. Such pretty clusters of tiny white flowers and with the texture of the leaves, it really makes them stand out. Native plant nurseries usually have these in stock if your interested.

Golden Mane Coreopsis

This is such a pretty wildflower. I picked up the seeds last year and it wasn't until this spring that I got around to planting them. I'm so glad I did. Every time I walk by them, they bring me a little smile.
